What To Expect

An essential part of a visit is the opportunity to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the spa. Guests can swim in the clear warm water of the inviting indoor heated pool, lined with blue mosaic tiles or relax in the steam room, saunas and the bubbling waters of the hot tub. There is a poolside snack bar and sports enthusiasts may enjoy a work out in the gym. It is also possible to unwind with a relaxing spa or massage treatment. This charming hotel and spa is housed in a country dwelling dating back to the reign of William III and comprises a total of 29 rooms. It is close to the city and is set on 20 acres of its own gardens and parkland. Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. After a period of neglect, the hotel was purchased and restored by Historic House Hotels who also own Hartwell House, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and Bodysgallen Hall, North Wales. The house is now decorated with antiques and fine pictures carefully chosen as consistent with the period of the house itself. The gardens and parklands have also been restored and include ha-has, a white garden, a walled garden, a small lake and some beautiful specimen trees. Facilities on offer to guests include a lobby area with a 24-hour reception and check-out service, a hotel safe, a cloakroom and lift access. It also offers a bar, a restaurant and conference facilities and guests may take advantage of the room and laundry services. There is parking available for those arriving by car. This hotel overlooks the York racecourse and is thus an obvious choice for the race-goer. It is only 2.4 km from York railway station and the city and guests will find a number of attractions in the surrounding area including Fairfax House, the National Railway Museum and York Minster (10 minutes drive) and Harewood House, the city of Leeds and Castle Howard (all around 40 minutes drive). Leeds Bradford International Airport is around 50 km away. Well known for its comfortable, luxurious atmosphere, the individual guestrooms and cottage suites are no exception. The comfortable and fully equipped bedrooms, each decorated individually, are located in the attractively restored 18th century courtyard. All come with a private bathroom with a shower/bathtub and a hairdryer as well as a king-size or double bed, a direct dial telephone and a TV. They are also equipped with a radio, Internet access and centrally regulated heating.
