This historic estate sprawls across 38 acres of the South’s most exquisite gardens, three restaurants, a posh Inn, and a historic mansion. The guided mansion tour leads guests through the architectural evolution of the mansion and recounts how a succession of owners and the Mississippi River built this manor house to the present day grand estate. Period antiques, artwork, and artifacts help set the mood along with costumed guides to tell the stories of plantation life. Once taking over 300,000 acres, Houmas House has endured wars, floods, abandonment, and the test of time. Spend the day and experience the Antebellum South.
What to remember
Important info
- It is suggested that guests wear comfortable shoes. High heels are not recommended as the property is quite expansive. In the summer months, the climate is very warm. Wear cool and comfortable clothes. Winters are mild, but occasionally it does get cold so please be prepared
- The mansion, restaurants, and gift shop are all centrally air-conditioned and heated
- Photography is allowed and designated sitting areas are offered in each room
- The guided mansion tour is one hour, but guests should plan to stay longer to explore the gardens and dine in The Carriage House Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner

Houmas House is located near New Orleans in Darrow, Louisiana. Taxi services are not available from Houmas House Plantation to Baton Rouge or New Orleans. If you need transportation, it is recommended you rent a car. If coming from New Orleans, a daily bus service is available.
