As one of the seven wonders of Ukraine, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a significant sacred and historical site.
Kyiv Pechersk Cave Lavra is the main holy shrine of Ukrainian orthodoxy. It is a monastic complex famed for its buried monks and hermits, spiritual atmosphere and unique underground caves. In the 11th century, a monk Anthony founded the monastery upon a search for solitude in the wilderness. He excavated a cave within the hillside. One by one monks began to join him. The monastery grew as wealthy princes and donated land and money. Destructions, persecutions and fires were numerous in the history of Lavra but its role as the centre of Ukrainian orthodoxy has been kept for ages.
