In 1949, the communist authorities decided to build a metallurgical plant and a new city on the fertile grounds of Pleszów and Mogiła - villages near Krakow. The urban plan of Nowa Huta and the architecture in the socialist realist style were based on the patterns of Renaissance and Baroque architecture and the American concept of the so-called ‘neighborhood unit’, when architects were working on a plan to expand New York. ‘The unit’ was to be a housing estate equipped with the necessary infrastructure for life and constituting a self-sufficient town.
Although socialist in form, Nowa Huta fascinates with its rich content. We invite you to visit Nowa Huta!
