The Machu Picchu site is divided into two large areas:
The first, located to the north, is urban. One can still find there the dwellings reserved for the nobility and some religious buildings (temple of the Sun, mausoleum of the Inca...).
The second, facing south, is rural. It is made up of a set of cultivated terraces – giving the appearance of gigantic staircases cut into the side of the mountain – and irrigation canals.
