One of the few places in the world where a community has formed within a volcanic caldera, El Valle de Antón was formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 5 million years ago. After the eruption, the volcano's crater collapsed, forming a volcanic caldera. Over time, the volcanic activity ceased, and the crater filled with water, creating a lake. Eventually, the water drained naturally, leaving behind a fertile valley surrounded by mountains and hills, which are remnants of the original volcanic structure.
