Wooden windmills and traditional greenhouses lining the water, fields of colourful tulips and craft shops dating back to the 18th-century: The heritage site Zaanse Schans is as picturesque as it can get. The village houses a collection of centuries-old windmills and charming wooden houses, most of which were moved there in the 1960s to preserve their cultural heritage. Yet Zaanse Schans is not a museum, there are actual people living in the houses and several windmills are still working. There is also a clog-factory, a bakery museum, and a traditional farm where you can sample delicious Dutch cheeses. www.dezaanseschans.nl
