A day excursion from Fez to Volubilis and Meknes will take us to the twin brother of Fez as well as the roman origins of Morocco. Meknes is the ancient capital of Morocco. Meknes was constructed during the early days of the present dynasty and served as the nation's initial capital. After decades of anarchy, this city emerged as the first capital of a united Morocco.
The fact that a Portuguese captive was responsible for designing the iconic gate Bab Mansour was a show of defiance to the European powers that were at the time. This captive was employed by Sultan Moulay Ismail as an architect, and he was also responsible for creating the Sahrij Souani Bassin and the underground jail. During times of conflict, these last monuments were operating at full capacity. We are going to pay a visit to the mausoleum of Mulay Ismail, who was the city's original founder.
