The undergrounds of Trastevere

+16 photos
The name of the district "Trastevere", literally means "Beyond the Tiber".
In ancient times here lived Jews and Freedoms (slaves who had bought their freedom). Trastevere, is one of the most beautiful and ancient districts of the city, rich in history, legends and underground sites.
We will begin our journey to discover the curiosities of Trastevere.
We will visit the basement of extraordinary and unusual churches and walk in the small ancient alleys. We will then cross the Tiber River to the Tiber Island where, believe it or not, an order of monks still maintains today, under their monastery, an ancient underground cemetery, where there are the preserved remains of many dozens of skeletons (Not open).
Finally we will arrive at the church of San Nicola in prison where we will visit, in its basement, the remains of three pagan temples.
