Once upon a time, there was an island, surrounded by one unique sea. For more than 9 million years this sea splashed on the coasts of our island, until it dried out completely, and disappeared. Our island became a mountain, and the Sea became a fertile Pannonian plain.
This may be the beginning of a story that would rock children back to sleep, but it is merely an entrance into the vast realm of tales beyond the myths and legends surrounding our island-turned-mountain. Fast forward to the present, and our mountain, once an island is called Medvednica Mountain, and at its foot proudly stands the city of Zagreb, Croatia’s Capital.
The enchanted forest where fairies dance and witches cook their potions is now a Nature Park, and Black Queen's medieval castle is now the Medvedgrad visitor center.
Embark on this journey from Zagreb's Main Square deep into the woods of the Medvednica Mountain, exploring the city, nature, history, and local dishes.
