The old town of Korčula is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean.
Walls and towers defended the strategic position of the city, whose layout of streets and squares is designed in the shape of a herringbone in order to provide residents with security and comfort. The Statute of the town, dating from 1214, regulated life in Korčula. Stonecutting and shipbuilding were the most important Korčula crafts from ancient times.
According to legend, the city was founded by the Greek hero Antenor after the fall of Troy.
Marko Polo, a famous traveler, is believed to be from Korčula.
