At the end of the 19th century, due to Barcelona's population growth and the advances in medicine, the hospital became too small. For this reason, the construction of a new building was considered.
It was thanks to the legacy of the banker Pau Gil that on January 15, 1902, the first stone of the new hospital center was laid, designed by the architect Lluís Domènech I Montaner, although it was not until 1930 when this new hospital was inaugurated.
