What To Expect

Dresden has a long history dating back to Neolithic era by Linear Pottery culture tribes 7500 BC and it is known by the end of the 12th century as the Slav village of “Drezdzany” – meaning “Forest Dwellers”. Due to the expansion of Germans to the east, it was colonised in the middle of the 13th century by Margrave Dietrich of Meissen. Since then, Dresden was in hand of various rulers including King of Bohemia and Margrave of Brandenburg, Wettin dynasty, Dukes of Saxony and Electors. After a disastrous fire in 1491, the city was rebuilt and fortified and in 1539 Dresden accepted the Protestant Reformation. In the late 17th and 18th century, the city is modernised in Baroque and Rococo style by both electors – Augustus I and Augustus II.
