Ceramic finds from the 7th century BCE attest to a settlement of the rocky hill of Berat by the Illyrians. Berat has been identified with the ancient Antipatrea. The name Berat has been derived through Albanian sound changes from the old Slavonic language Belgrad meaning “White cite". In 1961 Berat was proclaimed “Museum City” and in 2008 designated a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site.
